Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD Oil: What’s the Difference?

Erica Garza

When it comes to oils derived from the cannabis plant, you may be wondering how to distinguish one oil from another. While “hemp seed oil” and “CBD oil” are often discussed as though they refer to a single product, the products are actually quite different. To help you decide which product is right for you, here are some differences between hemp seed oil and CBD oil and a guide to understanding label ingredients so you can make an informed choice.

Is Hemp Seed Oil the Same as CBD Oil?

Though hemp seed oil and CBD oil are both derived from the cannabis plant, they are extracted from different parts of the plant, are processed differently and  produce different effects. CBD oil is extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the plant — the only parts of the plant where CBD is found. Hemp seed oil, on the other hand, is extracted from hemp seeds, which contain no CBD. This doesn’t mean that one type of oil is superior to the other. Each product offers its own unique health benefits.

Uses of Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seeds are a source of protein, vitamin E and other important minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc.

As a nutritional supplement, hemp seed oil has been called a “superfood.” When drizzled on salads or added into smoothies, it yields benefits similar to those provided by eating oily fish — essential fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-3 — but it is suitable for a vegetarian diet. It can be used in place of olive oil for cooking, although it does lose its nutritional value when heated.
Hemp seed oil, which contains gamma linoleic acid — used to reduce breast pain, irritability and fluid retention — may provide relief to women who suffer from symptoms of PMS and menopause. It may also be used to treat skin disorders. Some studies have shown that when used topically it relieves the dryness and itching associated with eczema. When applied to the scalp, hemp seed oil may reduce dandruff or prevent it altogether, and it may be integrated into other skin, hair and beauty routines.

Uses of CBD Oil

CBD oil, such as the CBD Pure Wellness product from Vitagenne, works directly with your endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for maintaining equilibrium in the body. It comes as CBD isolate, which is the purest distillation of the compound from hemp, or full-spectrum CBD, which contains a range of other complex plant compounds that some say may have synergistic effects when present together.

How to Distinguish Label Ingredients

If you’re trying to distinguish hemp seed oil from CBD oil, examine product packaging closely. If the ingredients do not clearly state the words “hemp seed oil” look out for “cannabis seed oil” or “cannabis sativa seed oil,” which are the scientific names for hemp oil and not the same as CBD oil. If you’re on the hunt for CBD oil, make sure the label reads “cannabidiol” or “CBD.” While both products offer potential benefits, it’s best to know you’ve found exactly what you need.
